Drug and alcohol addiction, including heroin and mathadone, impacts on all our lives with serious economic, social and public health consequences. Addiction affects one's sense of self, both mentally and physically, causing depression and alienation, anger and despair. Addiction also impacts on wider society: devastating family life, terminating careers, increasing unemployment and threatening health.
Currently Australia is the world leader in needle exchange and methadone maintenance programs. While both are effective strategies for harm minimisation, Addiction Treatment and Psychology Service's program is abstinence based. Until recently, achieving long-term abstinence has had little success; due to low compliance to treatment programs and high drop out rates. Our naltrexone program offers a treatment alternative for some who are dependent on heroin, methadone or other drugs of addiction.
"Heroin and methadone blocking implants (opiate antagonist implants) seem to diminish craving, enhance regeneration of natural opiate functions and act to block the euphoric effect of opiates" from "The Use of Naltrexone in the Treatment of Opiate Dependency".

I have been clean from using Herion for over a year now, i've just finished my second implant, and the result in which i've gotten from it is exactly what i expected. No drug use, No criminal activity and great relationship which partner and family.
This treatment has saved our daughter's life. She had been using heroin for years and using all the usual means of making money to pay for her habit including run ins with the law. I resucitatede her when she overdosed in our bathroom and we laid awake most nights waiting for a phone call to tell us that she was dead or in jail. We tried Brupenorphine and all sorts of rehab and counseling to no avail. We were desperate whem I found Psych n Soul on the net. While on naltrexone she hasn't used heroin. She has had lots of family support and has a job in the family small business. She still drinks and ocassionally uses other drugs but that is getting less as time goes on. She is steadily getting her life back together. We expect that she'll need naltrexone for some years to come. We are so grateful to Psych n Soul and naltrexone because it has turned all our lives around. My only regret is that it is too expensive for so many young people who could be helped. It should have government support. The cost savings in health and police and courts and heartache for families would be huge.
While I can sympathise with Josephine's loss, it quite possible that cardiac arrest could have occurred whilst 'using' or being on methodone or bupe. When you use or are on one of the other programmes there is also no doctor there if complications occur - you leave the clinic immediately after taking the medication with no follow up if you don't return. On top of that, methodone clinic workers are often extremely judgemental and know they hold your life in their hands - methodone, bupe and using is nothing better that being in jail - it is the very definition of liquid cuffs with the knowledge that no-one trusts you or believes that you can take control over your own life. Lots of people continue to use on top of methodone and bupe and this creates a higher risk of overdose and hence death. Unfortunately, any person involved in using drugs has the possiblity of dying - we all know that risk. Heroin withdrawal with naltrexone is not usually met with complications but if the person fails to mention other addictions such as to alcohol or benzo's, complications can indeed occur. Naltrexone has had some incredibly positive results, that are often gone unheard or have been down right ignored, as the methodone nazi's try to discredit it. Methodone costs us on-goingly and is merely replacing one drug for another - THIS IS NOT TREATMENT! Naltrexone gives you the opportunity to build a life free from the drug-using lifestyle. The drug-using lifestyle made my life isolated and impossible for 17 years before attempting a naltrexone detox however when seeking assistance absolutely no methodone clinic would assist me, even when I was already registered with one. Pysch and Soul literally saved my life! Their program should be core funded by Dept of Health so that people like me can access naltrexone treatment via medicare system. But then the methodone nazi's would have to give up some of their funding and would miss out on all of the money that they make from us. Its time the government got real and gave addicts a chance to autonomy and respect and put naltrexone treatment on PBS. Naltrexone has also been noted throughout the world as having a positive result for slowing the progression of Multiple Sclerosis yet is still not on PBS for even this condition. What other auto-immune illnesses might it help? Psych and Soul staff treated me with the respect and the rights that I deserve, as does every other person in society. Other Drug treatment programs could learn from their way of working. I wish I had known about Psych and Soul a long time ago but every health service, including ADIS, has failed to mention them to me, even when I was specially asking about naltrexone treatment. Methodone clinics would not discuss it. No - keep me registered on a methodone or bupe program with Dept of Health (much like a criminal database of addicts) and ensure that my drug history follows and impact on me for the rest of my life. Thankyou Psych and Soul for everything you have done for me - for giving me back a life with purpose and for respecting my human rights (something we often forget that addicts have). Adult addicts have the right to make an informed choice about what treatment they decide to go with; how they want their treatment to be handled; and to be respected in that choice. When other health services censor this information, our rights are being trodden on. We are not stupid, we are simply addicted to a drug but that's not the only thing about us. I would fully reccommend the services of Psych and Soul to those who are wanting to leave the drug lifestyle behind and who want to detox the easiest and safest way possible. Just be honest if you have any poly-drug use history so the staff are aware of what complications may occur. If you want to be 'clean' then Psych and Soul is the way to go!! Best wishes to you all!
This i believe is a very safe procedure if everything you are told to do is followed and taken seriously. The only time problems arise is when a patient has not been honest and has used ANY type of drug before the procedure. It is made clear the impact it could have on a positive outcome. I have heard of many positive outcomes and people being able to take back control of their lives and be accepted in society as a normal functioning person again. Families have been reunited, trust can start to form and a sense of belonging is the ultimate positive outcome. Just to know that you can live a drug free life by doing the Rapid Detox and never have to worry about bad times in ones life and the baggage you can leave behind, I couldn't put a price on it. Iv'e done a rapid, no complications what so ever. I thank Ross and this procedure for many reasons. It didn't save my life , It saved me.
I too am very sorry to hear of your loss Josephine. I am not an addict but i have many friends that have been battling with addiction for a long time. I think that Pixie said some thing very wise, and i belive that it is better to live your life with the belief in yourself that you CAN be clean and that this is a programe that potentially can be of great assistance in achieving that goal.
People with addictions need help, and they dont need judgement, they need support. I think Psychnsoul is a place that can provide that and that they, unlike alot of other addiction treatment facilities are willing to.
Something to think about i guess.,.....
While I am very sorry for your loss Josephine, I think that people who are addicts are already frightened when they turn to this site for hope. I am glad to hear what your experience is, but I think that it has just scared me more and I am already frightened and we do know these risks when we decide to do these programs. i would rather die trying to get clean than die from an overdose, or having lived my life as a junkie.
