Treatment Plans
Naltrexone Maintenance
Naltrexone is an opiate antagonist that seems to diminish craving and enhances the regeneration of natural opiate function. A daily tablet or implant (see attached information) acts as the patient's first line of ‘defense' against relapse. With the craving diminished, it allows patients to focus on their healing process. The aim is to create a physically supportive environment so that psychological counselling can be much more effective. This medication creates no dependency and the immediate use of this treatment improves the outcome of the rehabilitation process.
Antabuse Treatment
Antabuse is an inhibitor of aldehyde dehydrogenase, ie., an enzyme transforming acetaldehyde (the principal metabolite of ethyl alcohol) to acetic acid. Ingestion of alcohol after implantation of the medicinal product increases acetaldehyde concentration in the body and produces symptoms of acetaldehyde. Symptoms include: nausea, vomiting, tachycardia (palpitation), hypotension, dizziness, flushing and redness of face. Combined with naltrexone this aversive medication should increase compliance rates and improve outcomes compared to other treatment or when either medication is used in isolation.
