Alcoholic dependency impacts on all our lives with serious economic, social and public health consequences. As an alcoholic, one's sense of self is affected, both mentally and physically, causing depression and alienation, anger and despair. Alcoholic dependency also impacts on wider society, devastating family life, terminating careers, increasing unemployment and threatening health.

Traditionally the treatment for alcoholic dependency involved long-term stay in residential facilities or controlled drinking programs. While both are effective strategies for harm minimisation, Addiction Treatment and Psychology Service's (ATPS) program is abstinence based. Until recently, achieving long-term abstinence has had little success; due to low compliance to treatment programs and high drop out rates. Our program offers a treatment alternative for some alcoholics.

Our method is a safe, effective and holistic approach for individuals who are dependent on alcohol. Based on rigorous data collection, research and a commitment to excellence, our three-stage program is another treatment régime against addiction. ATPS provides a safe and effective pharmacological block against drinking using a combination of Naltrexone and Anatabuse, either orally or as an implant in combination with intensive psychosocial services.

While this treatment is still considered experimental by some groups, it has been used successfully overseas for many years, as well as in Australia . The Australian Government has approved the use of Naltrexone to facilitate detoxification from opiates and Antabuse has been used for many years in oral form. As with any medical procedure there are some risks and these risks will be fully explained before any treatment takes place.

The ATPS program is based on a multi-disciplinary and research based approach to overcoming alcohol dependency. It is dedicated to finding and implementing compassionate and effective solutions for our clients with addiction and psychological problems.

The Addiction Treatment and Psychology Services Program

1

Assessment, Selection and Preparation Selection criteria ensure patient's motivation and a solid support structure. A psychosocial assessment and a thorough medical assessment determine suitability. At least two sessions of pre-detoxification counselling are undertaken. A Psychologist appointment with client and support person will complete preparation.

2

Detoxification

A thorough assessment of the most appropriate form of detoxification is required. If there a risk of fitting or serious physical withdrawals then a medicated detoxification under medical supervision may be required.

3

Aftercare

A comprehensive aftercare program that includes support during the immediate post detox period, 6-12 months Naltrexone and Antabuse maintenance, individual and family counselling and employment/education assistance.
