Ross Colquhoun is the researcher and consultant psychologist who developed and implemented the clinical program for Addiction Treatment and Psychology Services, using Naltrexone and out-patient counselling to treat people dependent on opiates. The program has been running in its present form since April 1998. The program was developed from a body of research published in scientific, peer reviewed journals, which supported each component of the program. Much of the theoretical basis for the out-patient programs was presented in a paper, "Use of Psychometric Tests in Alcohol and other Drugs Out-Patient Programs" to the Australia Conference on Addictive Disorders in 1998. By combining a number of pharmaceutical and psychological interventions the program is designed to improve outcomes for that group of highly addicted people who have tried a number of times in conventional programs to quit and have failed each time.

After completing his Bachelor of Science degree in 1995, majoring in Psychology, he was awarded a short-term Higher Degree Research Scholarship from the University of Wollongong , Dept of Psychology and worked on a number of research projects including HIV/AIDS and Post-natal Depression. He also completed a thesis entitled "Burnout in Mental Health Professionals" which was published in the Journal of Occupational Health and Safety and the Journal of Rehabilitation Counselling. He has delivered a number of papers, mainly on drug and alcohol issues, to conferences and seminars. The paper, "Outcomes of a Naltrexone Treatment Program for Opiate Dependency" was presented to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Winter School in the Sun conference in Brisbane in July, 1999 and was published with other papers from the conference in "New Horizons: Reducing Drug Harm in the New Millenium" A paper comparing the outcomes for people on oral and implant naltrexone after 12 months was published in 2005 in the Journal of Opioid Management.

In 1996 he opened a psychology practice, while he taught at the West Wollongong TAFE, the Australia Institute for Counselling in Addictions and at the University of Wollongong . Concurrently, he is completing his thesis for a Doctorate of Health Science through Deakin University in Victoria.
