Frequently Asked Questions

Why is our treatment different?

Our treatment program has a higher success rate than any other treatment. We see you as a person with a problem that is above all medical. Rapid Opiate Detoxification (ROD) is a fast and effective detoxification that reduces danger and withdrawal pain. It diminishes post-treatment depression and increases the motivation for treatment. You can immediately embark on a pharmacological and psychological after-care program following detoxification. PLease note, ROD has been suspened for the moment while we complete the new Licensing process

How can I manage to stay drug free after ROD?
In addition, we have developed a special program to support you after treatment. This program consists of non-addictive aftercare medication, a heroin and methadone blocking implant and a psychological support program. Ultimately, staying clean depends on you.

What will happen if I use opiate drugs again after treatment?
If you take opiate drugs after treatment, they will not work because the implant blocks the effect of opiates. However, if you take a big dose, there is still a risk of overdose. If you cease taking the oral blocking medication or the effect of the implant ceases, and use opiates, your risk of overdose is much higher as your tolerance is greatly diminished.

When can I go back to work?
As soon as you feel strong enough - usually after 1-2 weeks.

How will I feel after the treatment?
Weak but OK. Many patients feel better than ever, but some my experience discomfort (eg nausea, diarrhoea, sleep difficulties etc) for a few days. These symptoms are normal and should gradually disappear.

Is the treatment safe? Are there any dangerous side effects to the OD treatment?
Thousands of patients have been treated without complications, although, with a medical procedure there are some risks, and there are no dangerous side effects to taking heroin and methadone blocking medication.

How will this affect my sex life?
It will return to normal within a month: that is, as it was before your addiction.

Why do I need to take Heroin and methadone blocking medication?
Heroin and methadone blocking medication is your insurance. As long as you take it every day, or you have an implant inserted, you cannot relapse to opiate addiction. It will help your body recover faster and will protect you while the healing process takes place. Long-term success depends upon you making significant changes in your life. With the use of heroin and methadone implants, compliance is greatly increased and outcomes seem to be better when compared to use of oral heroin and methadone blocking medication.

What happens if I forget to take the pill?
If it is the first pill you missed, take it immediately. If you took drugs, phone us immediately for advice - this can happen and is sometimes a necessary part of the healing process. We make no judgements; we are here to help you. With an implant you can't ‘forget', however when it is no longer effective you need to be careful and have another inserted if you feel vulnerable.

Can I undergo dental treatment?
Yes, as long as you will not be sedated by opiate narcotics. Show the dentist your Medialert Card. You can receive local anaesthetics, antibiotics and pain medication that does not contain opiates.

Do I have to attend the after-care program?
Absolutely. We have developed a special after-care program to support you after ROD. We do not believe in the phrase - 'once an addict, always an addict'. It is possible to leave the addiction behind you. Our therapy is goal orientated and geared towards helping you to adjust to a drug free life. If you cannot afford to be part of our program we can recommend other Government funded programs that may be helpful. Remember, it is the work you do after your detox that makes the difference in the long-term.

Can I eat anything?
Yes, but only small portions during the first week. Your digestive system will be very sensitive at first. Your appetite and enjoyment of food will return soon.

Is the medication dangerous in any way? Does it have side effects?
The medication is not dangerous. It is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia , the Federal Drug Administration in the US and drug agencies in various other countries. The side effects are minor and disappear within a week. Ongoing medical examinations, i.e. liver/blood tests will monitor your general health. Using opiates if you stop your medication can be very dangerous.

If I have a liver problem, does it mean that I cannot take the medication?
Actually, the treatment itself will help your liver function and many other problems you might have had without having been aware of them. It is much harder for your liver to metabolise street heroin than to metabolise the medication. Pathology testing of your liver function can be done by a simple blood test every 2-3 months. Freedom from drugs and a healthy diet and lifestyle will tend to improve liver function.

Aftercare counselling is essential to ensure that healthy and appropriate coping behaviours are learnt, rather than substituting other drugs for heroin and methadone.
